OTHER PROMINENT PLAYERS

Not all of the former MUSC players went to make their mark athletically in soccer. Two prominent examples are Kawika Kahui and Kaluka Maiava, who have enjoyed success on the gridiron.

Kahui was a two-time MIL first-team soccer pick who also was a two-MIL first-team football selection as a defensive end at Baldwin High School. He was named MIL Boys Athlete of the Year as a junior. Kawika played on a state championship under-16 team for MUSC. After high school, Kahui walked on at San Diego State and, by his senior season, was all-Mountain West football selection and a team captain for the Aztecs. Kahui, whose late mother, Alexa, was the original president of MUSC and whose father continues to coach keikis in the club, was on the practice squad of the San Diego Chargers and most recently was a starting linebacker for the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.

Maiva played as a youngster with MUSC and returned to soccer during his final two seasons of high school. Kaluka also played for MUSC on a team that won a state under-18 title. After an outstanding prep career that included two all-MIL first- team selections, as well as MIL Player of the Year and all-state honors, Maiava accepted a football scholarship to University of Southern California football teams that won two national titles during his career at USC. Entering his senior season, Kaluka is a projected starting linebacker for the Trojans this fall.

The Tesoro brothers, Cody and Sean, both played for MUSC before deciding to concentrate on other sports. Their younger sister, Tara, currently plays for the club. Cody was named to state ODP teams before opting to focus on basketball. He was an all-MIL pick at Baldwin and currently is playing college hoops. Sean played on an under-12 MUSC team that won a state title and took part in a regional tournament in Utah. Sean is a recent graduate of Baldwin and accepted a football scholarship as an offensive lineman from Nevada-Las Vegas.
